Aside from being a wonderful place for holiday and relaxation, Gargano is also an ideal place for religious pilgrimage.
Pilgrimages, understood as a journey to a sacred place, are becoming more frequent and required and exactly in this field Gargano stands among the most popular destinations. The basic idea of the traveler who is going to visit this holy places is the need to visit places considered “inhabitated” by divinity in various forms.
It’s right here on Gargano, where the existence of pilgrimage is attested with four phrases found on the walls of a sanctuary, since the seventeenth century AD, the tourist will find the perfect place to live out their religious travel experience.
To reach the sanctuary, meaning climbing right to the town, you must face a street full of curves which will offer many breathtaking views. The marine landscape below and the clouds over the Gulf of Manfredonia will give you a spectacular view and the feeling that you are on top of the world. Once arrived in the small town, you will notice an agglomeration of typical white houses, whose walls leave little room for narrow cobbled streets which leave no grass in sight. Every inch of space is exploited to the full, it almost seems that the houses want to gather closer to the famous cave.
The cave I speak of is the only Catholic construction in the world build without human intervention. Are you wondering why?
Because Saint Michael the Archangel came here before all, “This place inspires respect, this is the house of God and the gate to heaven”, so says the ancient inscriptions above the entrance of the sanctuary. For this reason the sanctuary is called Basilica Celeste Monte Sant’Angelo.
The church located in the center of the town of Monte Sant’Angelo is a true Catholic Sanctuary, with facades decorated with artistic marble statues and decorations dating back to the thirteenth century AD. The staircase composted of 86 steps descends to the famous cave of Saint Michael the Archangel and still retains traces of ancient frescoes, phrases and fingerprints of the passage of crusaders and medieval pilgrims; and right at the end of this staircase an inscription in Latin recalls that:
HAEC EST TOTO ORBE TERRARUM DIVI MICHAELIS ARCHANGELI CELEBERRIMA CRIPTA UBI MORTALIBUS APPARERE DIGNATUS EST HOSPES HUMI PROCUM – BENS SAXA VENERARE LOCUS ENIM IN QUO STAS TERRA SANCTA EST
This is the crypt of Saint Michael the Archangel, celebrated all over the world, where he deigned to appear to men. O pilgrim, thou wilt fall down, worship these stones because the place in which you stand is holy.
